The history of UAF dates back in 1917, but it was only in 1922 that the institution, then known as Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines opened its doors for the first classes. Over the years, the University of Alaska Fairbanks passed through some major changes and developments, all pointing to what the educational institution represents today. UAF is famous at international level for the research in the Pacific Rim and the circumpolar North, being one of the 100 American universities that benefit of funding from the National Science Foundation. It was in 1991 that University of Alaska Fairbanks was designated by NASA as a space grant institution for aerospace research, making it a Land, Sea and Space Grant institution. Today, UAF offers a wide variety of major academic programs to its sudents, from bachelor's degree to master's degree, and it is the only institution in Alaska that provides Ph.D. degrees in anthropology, mathematics, natural resources, engineering and other areas.

There is even a place especially designed for meetings of the university community, the Wood Center, where both students and faculty staff can enjoy a food court, bowling lanes, lounge and games area and a snack bar, together with a pub. Besides the main campus of UAF, in Fairbanks, there are also several community and rural campuses in downtown Fairbanks, Bethel, Dillingham, Kotzebue and Nome, maintained through UAF's Interior-Aleutians Campus in Fairbanks, all part of he College of Rural and Community Development.
UAF Athletics are currently known as the Nanooks, with gold and blue as specific colors and the polar bear as a mascot. But what does a `nanook` mean? It is actually the equivalent of `polar bear` for the Inupiaq word `nanug`. Before 1963, when the athletic teams received the name of `Nanook`, they were known as the `Polar Bears`. UAF teams compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. However, besides the intercollegiate competitions, the University of Alaska Fairbanks provides also intramural sports options and facilities to its students, offering the possibility to socialize with other students and get some exercise or just take a break from homework.
